The Zeus special tool RW 161-xx-S for conical knurling applications reduces processing time and investment costs. Due to a compact tool design, machine space usage is also optimized.
Successful tool development depends on many factors. A decisive factor for a successful product development is, however, whether the novelty can create a clear advantage for the end-user or not. Creating a customer benefit, is the starting point for tool developments at Hommel+Keller. With the development of the Zeus RW 161-xx-S the company proves once more its expertise in the knurling technology, by creating a customized tool with significant application advantages.
Individual application optimization

The knurling tool RW 161-xx-S has been developed for knurling conical work pieces. The particularity about the application is the customer’s requirement for knurling two different knurling profiles with minimal tool costs and minimal process time. In the development stage, great importance has been attached to a pressure minimizing tool construction. The knurling tool RW 161-xx-S meets the customer demands in every aspect: The Zeus RW 161-xx-S allows a cost-effective and process safe application at reduced investment costs.
The tool

The knurling tool RW 161-xx-S is designed for tangential tool direction and is therefore equipped with two knurl holders. The knurl holders carry each a knurling wheel with different profiles and different pitch sizes. The tool is suitable for CNC, automatic sliding head screw machines and multispindle automatic lathes .
Reduced process time- Minimal tool pressure
Through the simultaneous operation of both knurling wheels, the processing time and piece cost can be considerably reduced. A further significant advantage of the tool lies in the improved machine space usage, as for knurling two different knurling profiles, only one tool place is occupied. The tool offers further application advantages: Especially for small work piece diameters, the forces developed through the knurling process can sometimes cause difficulties. With the tangentially working knurling tool, however, the lateral pressure exerted on the work piece is minimal due to the double-sided guiding that allows a balancing of the forces. A gentle processing method is facilitated.

Clever solution – Angle adjustment
Conical knurling applications pose specific demands on the knurling process, the tool and the user. For example with conical knurling applications, the angular adjustment of the knurling wheel needs to be adjustable, in order to achieve an even profile depth. For this specific application requirement a clever solution was developed. By means of the swivelling knurling head an easy angular adjustment is possible.
Long-term cost savings
For complex knurling applications with increased production requirements, an individual tool design provides many advantages. As can be seen from the application example RW161-S, a customized tool solution can pay off in many ways:
Reduced processing times, reduced investment costs and increased process safety are some of the advantages offered by the RW161-xx-S. Hommel+ Keller is specialised in the manufacture of customised knurling tools and can provide optimal solutions for complex knurling applications.
